The Rat Terrier is an American breed of dog, and, contributing to it's name, stands only thirteen to eighteen inches at the shoulder, yet can weigh anywhere from five to thirty five pounds. Rat Terriers have a coat which is short and dense, yet smooth to the touch and a remarkable sheen. When they are shedding, it is important to use a rubber brush to remove any dead hairs. The Rat Terrier's whiskers are normally not removed.

This dog has a great reputation for being an affectionate and uncomplicated dog, which is gentle and intelligent, and sensitive and fearless at the same time. Rat Terriers are sometimes been described as having a dual personality. This is because it is a fearless and tenacious hunter possessing seemingly unlimited energy. Yet when it is not hunting, the Rat Terrier becomes an exceptionally friendly companion, which gets along very well with children, other dogs, and even cats (to a point). The Rat Terrier is an energetic, alert dog whose curiosity and intelligence make him easy to train. Rat Terriers enjoy human companionship immensely and will enthusiastically share any activity with their owners.
